Growing Orchids Indoors - 3 Essential Rules For Success

By John Jay Amarant

Caring for orchids can be harder than expected, but watching them wilt or suffer while in your care is much harder.

Getting a perfect bloom on your orchid can be difficult and it will not happen unless you have a healthy plant. Below are my three tips to keep your plant well.

1. Orchids And Water - It is very easy to over water an orchid, and your orchid will soon show that it is unhappy. An orchid does not need watering daily, once every five days will probably be sufficient, and they can survive for up to two weeks without water. Different orchids will however have different requirements, so make sure you know as much as possible about your plant.

When the days are shorter and darker your orchid will probably not need as much water, so expect to change your orchid care with the seasons.

2. The Sun Can Harm Your Orchid - Orchids need sun, but it's easy for them to get too much direct sunlight. Direct sunlight may cause dark spots to appear on the leaves of the plant or it is possible that the leaf will still look healthy, but the deep green tone will start to fade.

Think bright sunlight rather than direct sunlight, the difference may seem slight to you, but to an orchid we are talking life or death.

3. Pests And Orchids - There is no sure fire way to make sure that you never get an infestation, but the best prevention is to make sure that you monitor your orchids daily.

One of the things to watch for are dead leaves. Pests will live in the old leaves if they go damp, so keep your orchid soil and surrounds in order.

Overall, a happy, healthy orchids needs regular attention and the correct environment to flourish. - 31996

Your Orchids Will Thrive With These Orchid Care Tips

By Sarah Duke

Orchids are known to be finicky plants to cultivate; yet the attractive flowers they turn out are more than worthwhile. Here are a handful of guidelines that will help your orchids to prosper.

Growing Medium: Orchids won't survive in ordinary potting soil. This type of medium is typically too thick and can accumulate throughout the plant's roots and suffocate them. Rather than using regular growing medium, you'll need to use a specialized orchid growing medium consisting of a combination of inorganic and organic materials. The orchids roots should be kept well ventilated by ensuring that the pot isn't filled too tightly and that you use a container that is the right size for the plant. Don't get a container that's too large since it will store a high amount of liquid that your orchid doesn't want, which can result in root rot.

Humidity: The ecosystem of an orchid is the moist regions of rainforests and mountains. If they are cultivated within a house, they'll do what they can to reproduce this atmosphere yet, with exclusion of the bathroom, the orchid's natural environment can't be simulated indoors without some effort. To make it similar, you need to spray the air around your orchid plant so that it obtains the dampness it must have to flourish. You can also place bowls of water, a water fountain or humidifier next to the plant. You may wish to raise your orchids in a greenhouse because these enclosures normally have increased humidity levels with better ventilation.

Sunshine: Orchids like natural light providing it's not harsh. Sunshine that's too bright can create damage to your plant and its foliage. If you spot a reddish hue to your plant's foliage, it's a sign that it's exposed to too much sun. Make certain to reposition the plant to a less sunny spot, or give it a bit of shade by way of blinds or curtains.

Temperature: Orchids flourish in the temperature range of 70 to 90 degrees F; though, the specific temperature range varies depending on the type of plant you are raising. For most orchid species, temperatures should fall through the night as well as the dormant periods to ensure that they can flower. If you are cultivating your orchid plants inside, getting the desirable temperature isn't that difficult and you don't need to do anything further to the atmosphere. Then again, if there are issues, you might have to move the orchid to a different location throughout specific times of the year.

Water: Make sure to water your orchid with care. Normally, an orchid doesn't need water more than once each week. If you're uncertain if your plant wants water, look into how damp the growing medium is. If it's still quite wet, don't give it more water. If it's entirely dry, it's time to water your orchid. - 31996
